In 2002, I stopped playing and performing music. Occasionally,
I would make music using a DAW, but I found the process empty
and stressful. Listening to the same music repeatedly would fry
my brain. By the time I finished a project, I really didn't want to hear
it again.
By 2019, my studio, only 100 square feet, was full of paintings and
drawings. It was becoming impractical. So, at almost 65 years old,
I decided to purchase a small synth. At least I wouldn't need extra
space to store recordings, just a jump drive.
The synth arrived unexpectedly on my late brother's birthday. One
thing led to another, and here I am, creating music again. I didn't know
much about the equipment available these days, so there was a lot of trial
and error. After a few years, I found the gear that produces a sound
that I enjoy.
In the past, I created and perform songs, typically three to five
minutes long. However, I needed to break away from that.
It became monotonous playing the same songs repeatedly,
with the audience anticipating familiar tunes.
So, I've decided to create a sonic environment - a predictable space.
Akin to visiting the beach, the forest, or a park. At the beach, for instance,
you expect certain beachy elements and a somewhat predictable atmosphere.
That's the kind of music I create now. Like visiting the beach, listeners can arrive
at any time and depart whenever they please.
My goal has been to be able to sit down and record an hour of music
without stopping. I figured, at the very least, I'd have new music to
listen to throughout the day, and it would be effortless to share it.
